The Chatto book of the Devil is a must-read for anyone who is interested in history, lore and speculation surrounding this archetypal figure. A mixture of fact, fiction and pure fantasy, it is both interesting and informative. I read it because of the research I’m currently doing into how the history of the word ‘Devil’ has influenced religious thought, and more specifically, relationships between different religions. It’s far more than just an academic book, though: it’s entertaining, too. If you’re at all interested in Satan – or, for that matter, in gods – take a look.
