Conversations With My Mother

The saddest thing she’s ever seen

My mother: “I think I need to call my friend and see if he’s OK. I’m really worried about him.”

Me: “Oh no, why?”

My mother: “I follow him on Flickr and yesterday he posted the saddest picture I’ve ever seen!”

Me: “What was it?”

My mother: “A leaf.”

Me: “A leaf?”

My mother:”Yes. A leaf, all alone. A sad leaf.”

Me: “Maybe he just took a picture of it because it was a pretty leaf?”

My mother: “But it had raindrops on it. A sad, lonely leaf with raindrops. It was the saddest thing I’ve ever seen.”
