This morning I got up late, having gone for a nine-mile walk last night, and I was curled up in a chair, working in my pyjamas, when I received the following message from my BFF.
So I got my metaphorical coat on (I’m Scottish, it’s not cold to me), and hopped on a train to the Vaults, where Charlie Tuesday Gates’ studio has been housed for quite some time.
Who is Charlie Tuesday Gates?
She’s a vegan taxidermy artist.
Her show, Sing For Your Life, is both irreverent and not for the squeamish. In an interview I did with her several months ago, I asked her about the apparent disconnection between these two lives. She responded:
I’m fascinated by the way we purport to care about our about our fellow species, and yet are blinded and driven to cruelty by narcissism and commodity. Art awakens the senses and brings darkness to light, exposing the cracks in humanity and even questioning the very principles that underpin our reality.
No one wants things forced down their throat but through entertainment you can trick people into learning.. Make things fun and people will listen.
Art opens the eyes to the unseen . If people don’t see how can they care and if people don’t care how can they change. . Life is being pushed to the absolute limits. All people want is sensationalised gimmicks that don’t mean anything. Life should be about more than just a song and a dance.
She’s clearing out her studio until the end of this month. She’ll be there until 8pm today (12th Feb), and then sporadically for the rest of the week, and then again during the last week of the month. You can find out more on her Facebook page.
So, what sort of things is she selling? These.
