A few years ago my friend found a Buzzfeed list of questions to ask yourself at the end of each year, and they were quite good so I incorporated them into my annual traditions. Here is this year’s contribution.

What did you do in 2018 that you were proud of?

Joined forces with a research team at the University of South Wales and wrote a couple of papers.

Whom did you meet this year who inspired you?

Right at the end of the year, I went to an open evening at Regent’s uni to look at their psychotherapy courses. I spoke to Jonathan Hall, who runs the existential psychotherapy side, and we ended up having a long discussion about philosophy and psychology and Kierkegaard and the nature of truth. It was the final thing that pushed me into the decision to apply for the course, which I will be starting in January.

What did you read that you think bettered you?

Ask Me About My Uterus by Abby Norman. It encouraged me to keep pushing the doctors for better healthcare.

It also led to me following Abby on all the social media, and that in turn meant I saw this thing she posted on Instagram, which I printed out and stuck on the wall of my kitchen office for when I needed reminding, which has been often.

What song defined this year for you?

What were some fears that you had at the beginning of the year that you overcame?

I’m not sure if it happened this year, or if I just noticed it this year, but at some point I got rid of my impostor syndrome and I’m not even sure how. I used to have this constant fear that I was a fraud in various areas of life (business, investigation, academia…) and that at some point I’d be ‘found out’ and They would tell me off. I was never sure who They were, though.

Anyway, that’s disappeared. I have realised that, while I have my faults like anyone else, I am in fact a competent businesswoman, a pretty good investigator, and a sufficiently intelligent academic researcher. So that’s been nice.

What is your favourite photo that you took this year?

Ohhh I don’t know can I have a few? No?

Alright, fine. If I have to choose one, then strangely enough it’s probably this picture of tomatoes ripening on the living room windowsill.

Close runners-up (I know I’m cheating, but it’s my blog so I don’t care):

This house in NOLA.

These dying roses in my living room.

In which place did you feel true joy in 2018?

Standing in the ocean in South Carolina.

What was your biggest regret of 2018?

I’m not a big regretter of things, generally.

No, wait. Takeaways. I regret takeaways every time I get them, and yet still I persist in keeping Deliveroo in business.

Last year Adam J. Kurtz posted this question on Twitter, and he did it again this year so here are mine.

I wonder what next year’s answers will be?
