The Return of the Weekly Round-Up

As we all know, I’ve been offline a lot lately, and work hasn’t exactly been as busy as it normally is, due to my organs rebelling against their allocated tasks and rising up in a kind of painful internal revolution.

I’m not blogging as often either, mainly because my brain feels like it’s made of cotton wool that’s been drenched in chloroform. But it’s looking like this whole situation is going to be dragging on for fucking ages, and so I’ve decided to return to doing a round-up post once a week on this blog, for four reasons:

  1. There’s generally one day a week when I feel vaguely alive.
  2. I’d like to keep some kind of blog activity going.
  3. While I’m not able to do anywhere near as much as usual, I am still getting some stuff done. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that because of the amount of time I’m currently spending lying on the sofa watching Netflix, but I think it’d be good to reassure myself that I am still living my life, albeit in slo-mo.
  4. People keep asking me for updates on how I am and what condition my health is in, and it’s exhausting to have the same conversation 46 times, so if you want updates, you now know where to get them.

So, without further ado, the round-up of the last week or so.

I forgot to give this one a title and I still can’t think of one, so this will have to do

Last week wasn’t hugely exciting, and I can’t think of anything much to say in the weekly round-up except that there are lots of thrilling events coming up, so future ones will be much more interesting 😉

The Spiderbeast Saga And Other Stories

This week was largely taken up with pitches and client calls. I’m not sure if we’ll win the pitches, but I hope so. They’re all quite interesting and I’d like a chance to get my Italian translators a bit of extra work – things have been quiet on the freelance translation front over the summer.

I’m not even sure where this week went

I know I spent most of it working. In the early part of the week I designed a survey which is going to be sent out to digital forensic investigators. It includes a couple of questions that relate to some research I’d eventually like to do on the psychological effects of working full-time (or part-time, or at all) in a role that requires you to see some of the most awful things humans do to each other.

My job’s a bit of a conversation stopper. When I say “forensic investigation”, people generally think it’s incredibly cool. When I specify “computer forensics” they make reference to Garcia from Criminal Minds, or (if they know me well enough) to Lisbeth Salander.

And now I’m going back to bed

This week I’ve mainly been based in London, with a couple of trips elsewhere.

On Tuesday I went to the Roundhouse in Camden. I’d previously only thought of it as a gig venue, where I saw Amanda Palmer perform her Daily Mail Song and more recently saw Neutral Milk Hotel and sang along in the audience to King of Carrot Flowers. (I commented to my friend at the time that it’s probably one of the very few occasions when you’d get a load of people of all sort of religious/non-religious beliefs yelling “I LOVE YOU JESUS CHRIST” across a room.)

Obligatory Intro Post

I set this blog up today on something of a whim, but I’m hoping it keeps going for a while at least. Mainly because I tend to forget what I’ve done on a day-to-day basis, and having a blog helps with that.

I’m reintroducing a thing I used to do on my old blog, which was the ‘weekly round-up’. I used to try to write it on a Sunday, but inevitably by the time Sunday rolled around I’d just want to chill out and not bother thinking about the week that’d just passed. So it might end up being a Friday/Saturday thing this time.
