Onwards

Realities of a life spent doing many things: right now I am running on empty. It feels like less than empty, actually – like I’m in the minus numbers – but I suppose it can’t be, because I am in fact at work and just about upright in front of my computer.

I manage my life by themeing my days, which works well but means that it’s very difficult to take a day off without having a huge knock-on effect on everything else. And if anything moves in to disrupt the normal routine, it has a disproportionately large impact. Read more

tfw you’re already tired and then you act like an idiot and make yourself even more tired

On Monday last week I was exhausted. The week before had been fairly busy at work, and then of course there’d been uni at the weekend, so I was tired by Monday morning. I could have just worked a normal day in the office, but instead I arrived at 7.45 on Monday morning and left at 1.45am on Tuesday. This is not something I recommend, and it’s not something I do often these days.

How Do I Fit It All In? Six-Month Roundup

A few months ago, tired of people going “How do you fit it all in?!”, I started a blog series to answer that exact question. It was partly for other people but also partly for me; I wasn’t sure how I fitted it all in either. The answer used to be “I barely sleep” but these days I’m often in bed by 8pm, sometimes significantly earlier, so I knew it wasn’t that.

Where Do You Write?

Each person’s writing process is different, which is why you still might fail to write a book even if you’re following all the advice you’ve found on people’s blogs. So much of writing life, and freelance life, and life in general, is finding what works for you. And that might be very different from what works for someone else.

A lot of freelancers like coworking spaces because it helps them not to get lonely, for example. Personally, I don’t get lonely. I can’t remember ever having the feeling. So I don’t do coworking, because about 80% of why I’m a freelancer is so that I don’t have to talk to Other Humans all day.

Recently, however, I have discovered that a change of scenery from time to time can be helpful. So I haven’t started coworking, but I have started working from the garden centre café.  Read more

Apparently I am incapable of moderation, and also I can stretch time?

This does not come as a great surprise. A couple of weeks ago I looked at my growing to-do list, decided to be sensible, and said I’d be scaling back the blog to 2-3 posts per week.

However there’s this maxim that goes: “If you want something done, give it to a busy person” and I’ve realised I might be the human embodiment of it. Because the less I have to do, the less productive I am with any of it. Jobs take me hours, my house is a mess, etc. Give me more, though, and suddenly I’m a productivity machine.  Read more
